A periodontist is a specialist who concentrates on periodontal disease and dental implant surgery. After completing dental school, a periodontist must complete an additional three years of field training at an accredited institution such as a post graduate school or hospital. Considered a dental surgeon, a periodontist performs such surgeries of the oral cavity including periodontal surgery (Gum Surgery), dental implants, bone grafting, sinus augmentation and other advanced surgical procedures. Dr. Shin has performed more than 20,000 surgical procedures over the course of 10 years. Dr. Richard Shin graduated with honors from New York University School of Dentistry in 1999. He fulfilled his residency requirements in 2000 at Kings County Hospital and Down State Medical Center, located in Brooklyn, New York. He became board certified in Periodontology in 2003 after completing his specialty program at NYU, where he is currently a member of the dental school faculty. Dr. Shin was recognized for his clinical excellence by the Department of Periodontology with the "Best Clinician Award" in 2003. He published several articles in journals including: The American Academy of Periodontology; "Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome: Successful Outcome in 2005.”
